Earlier this month, The Walking Dead finally wrapped up the expanded season 10 after airing six extra episodes. Now, the producers and the crew are focusing on the upcoming eleventh and final season, which will end the show that first aired on Oct. 31, 2010. And while The Walking Dead universe will keep on expanding, fans should expect great things from the flagship series’ grand finale. At least, that’s what showrunner Angela Kang has been teasing while talking with TVLine.
“When we start [the final season], we’re rockin’ and rollin,’” she said. “We’re back to being big and scope-y.

The final installment will span 24 episodes, split into three eight-episode airing blocks, and run through late 2022. The first block of the final season of The Walking Dead will start airing on Aug. 22. Kang also teased that the show might explore new genres in the upcoming episodes, attempting to please the varied taste of the fandom and innovate as much as possible before the end.
“There’s going to be a feeling that things are just ripping along for the first block,” she added. “Then, we’re going for some different tonal things than we’re used to on the show, which hopefully will be fun for the audience.”
Once the flagship series is over, AMC will debut the new adventures of Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon and Melissa McBride’s Carol Peletier, who will lead their spinoff series. The show will debut somewhere in 2023 and will involve current The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang.
