James Gunn Reveals the Timeline For The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

The holiday season is still several months away, but James Gunn is already feeling festive. Earlier today, Gunn announced that he has completed the first draft of his script for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. He also marked the occasion by sharing a photo of the script’s title page. Check it out for yourself below.

Many Guardians actors are currently in Australia filming their appearances in Thor: Love and Thunder, which opens next May. Regardless, fans might be more curious to find when Peter Quill and his team will return to theaters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The sequel’s release date has been in flux over the last three years due to Gunn’s firing and subsequent re-hiring as the film’s director. But according to Gunn himself, the upcoming holiday special will fill in part of the gap between Taika Waititi’s new Thor movie and the Guardians’ next standalone adventure on the big screen.

Kevin Feige announced The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special during Marvel’s Disney Investor Day presentation last December. Gunn and his cast will shoot the special during production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Feige also confirmed that it will premiere on Disney+ “the holiday prior” to Vol. 3’s release in 2023. In other words, we can expect the holiday special to drop by the end of 2022.
