Dave Bautista Says He Doesn’t Want a Drax Solo Series

Marvel’s upcoming TV slate includes at least a dozen new shows hitting Disney+ over the next few years. Regardless, we can officially rule out a headlining vehicle for Dave Bautista’s Drax. In a new interview, the Guardians of the Galaxy star explained why the Kylosian destroyer is unlikely to get his own TV series anytime soon.

JoBlo caught up with Bautista while his latest film, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, was still in production. During their set visit, Bautista was asked about Marvel’s plans for the TV realm. And as it turns out, he was just as surprised as the fans by how many Marvel shows are currently in development.

Yeah, I was shocked,” said Bautista. “I got on my Twitter for a second and started to bash them for not making-like, not one Guardians [of the Galaxy] character got a TV show. Like, how does that happen? There’s so many interesting characters in that world. I just don’t get it. But, then I thought, I don’t know what they have in mind and I don’t know what they have planned.”

“I get that they take all their marquee characters and they gave them shows,” added Bautista. “So I don’t want to take away from that just ‘cause I’m bitter that nobody from our series–honestly, if they offered me a series, I wouldn’t do it. Not a chance in hell would I do a TV series playing Drax. That is a makeup nightmare. I would be miserable. Yeah, that makeup isn’t fun. It’s awful, so I’m not gonna sign up to do a series where I’m in that makeup every day.”

While shooting the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Bautista’s makeup process reportedly took somewhere between three to five hours. But by the time he started work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this was whittled down to about 90 minutes. This isn’t the first time that Bautista has cited the amount of time he spent in the makeup chair as the reason why a Drax solo series probably isn’t in the cards. He made similar remarks while speaking with Collider last year. However, he did reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn came up with an idea for a spinoff centering on his character and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis.

Army of the Dead wrapped principal photography in late 2019 (though it underwent reshoots last summer), so this interview probably took place before Marvel’s presentation at Disney’s Investor Day event back December. During the livestream, Kevin Feige announced that two Guardians-themed projects were in the works for Disney+. This includes The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and a series of I Am Groot shorts. Bautista will also return as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will likely arrive in 2023.
