As the new king of Westeros, Paddy Considine’s Viserys Targaryen will face danger from all sides. But the biggest threat might come from his own inner circle. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fabien Frankel will co-star on HBO’s upcoming House of the Dragon series as Ser Criston Cole, a member of Viserys’ Kingsguard “whose bold actions helped pave the way to civil war.”
A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin confirmed Frankel’s casting on his blog earlier today. He also shared some additional information about his character.
“He is the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven,” wrote Martin. “He has no claim to lands or titles, all he has is his honor and his skill with sword and lance. He is a challenger, a champion, cheered by the commons, beloved of the ladies. He is a lover (or is he?), a seducer (or is he?), a betrayer (or is he?), a breaker of hearts and a maker of kings … Welcome to Westeros, Fabien. And do keep that sword sharp.”

Frankel is a relative newcomer to the entertainment biz. He made his film debut in 2019 with Last Christmas, which also featured another big-name Targaryen in former Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. That same year, Frankel was also cast in a potential NYPD Blue follow-up, where he would have played the son of original series protagonist Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). However, ABC ended up passing on that show. Frankel currently appears in several episodes of The Serpent, a miniseries that premiered on Netflix earlier this month.
House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO in 2022.
