Tom Hiddleston Teases More Literal and Figurative Shapeshifting for Loki

Just a few days ago, Marvel Studios debuted a trailer for Loki where the title character deals with the Time Variance Authority. The story takes after Avengers: Endgame and pits Loki’s Machiavellian mind at work against the Timekeepers in the Norse demigod’s latest set of adventures. Tom Hiddleston will reprise the character he has embodied in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011’s Thor.

“Loki is the quintessential shapeshifter,” Hiddleston said while talking with Empire. “His mercurial nature is that you don’t know whether, across the MCU, he’s a hero or a villain or an anti-hero. You don’t know whether you can trust him. He literally and physically changes shape into an Asgardian guard, or into Captain America repeatedly. Thor talks about how he could change into a snake.”

Per Hiddleston, even the peculiar logo for the show is a hint for the plot. While he didn’t spoil too much about what’s coming next, the actor invited the fans to reflect on the many faces that Loki assumed in the MCU so far.

“I think that shapeshifting logo might give you an idea that Loki, the show, is about identity, and about integrating the disparate fragments of the many selves that he can be, and perhaps the many selves that we are. I thought it was very exciting because I’ve always found Loki a very complex construct. Who is this character who can wear so many masks, and changes shape, and seems to change his external feeling on a sixpence?”

Loki will debut on Disney+ on June 11.
