Today’s First Contact Day event has given Paramount the chance to share lots of Star Trek announcements, including some good news about the latest animated addition to the franchise. According to Deadline, Star Trek: Lower Decks has landed an early season 3 renewal from Paramount+. The streaming service also revealed when fans can start watching season 2.
During the Lower Decks part of the panel, Paramount confirmed that season 2 will premiere on Thursday, August 12. The series debuted last summer when the platform was still known as CBS All Access. The first season earned mostly positive reviews, although some critics argued that it didn’t take enough risks. Still, the lighthearted approach to Star Trek lore was generally well-received. To build hype for the Cerritos’ crew’s return later this year, Paramount also released a trailer for the new season. You can check it out for yourself below.

Not surprisingly, it looks like Beckett Mariner and her fellow ensigns will encounter more than they’re prepared to face when Lower Decks returns this summer. Plenty of new challenges await, including more dogfights in space and new alien beasts to put down. We will also get to see how Brad Boimler is adjusting to his new role aboard the U.S.S. Titan, as captained by Jonathan Frakes’ William T. Riker. But judging by his screaming fit at the end of the teaser, it’s not going that well.
Like the previous two seasons, Lower Decks season 3 will also consist of 10 episodes. These will most likely hit Paramount+ sometime in 2022.
