STARZ Cancels American Gods After Three Seasons

It’s official: American Gods has been cancelled by STARZ after three seasons. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, and a STARZ representative confirmed the news with a statement:

American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country.”

According to THR, Fremantle and STARZ are in negotiations about “a potential event series or movie that would wrap up the story.” However, this possible finale is far from certain.

Why did American Gods get cancelled? THR notes that the series’ ratings significantly declined over its three season run. Regardless, the creative turmoil behind-the-scenes may have played a larger role in sealing its fate. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, the original showrunners, were forced out by creative clashes with Fremantle. Additionally, the season 2 showrunner, Jesse Alexander, left after STARZ and Fremantle disagreed over the direction of the show.

There was also a very public feud between former co-star, Orlando Jones, and season 3 showrunner, Charles “Chic” Eglee. Jones portrayed Mr. Nancy, and he was also a contributing writer. Regardless, Jones contends that Eglee fired him because “he thinks that Mr. Nancy’s angry, get s*** done is the wrong message for black America.” If the ratings had risen or remained stable, perhaps the show could have withstood the ongoing creative turmoil. But for now, the third season is the end.
