During the last few seasons of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Bella Ramsey stole several scenes as Lyanna Mormont. Now, Ramsey is heading back to HBO to headline The Last of Us.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Ramsey has been cast as Ellie, the girl at the center of The Last of Us, and the star of its sequel, The Last of Us Part II. Within the first game, a smuggler named Joel protected Ellie as he escorted her on a long journey in a post-apocalyptic world. The vast majority of humanity’s survivors were infected by a mutated virus that made them dangerous cannibals. However, Ellie’s survival may hold the key to finding a cure.
Ramsey has also had leading roles in The Worst Witch and Netflix’s Hilda animated series. More recently, she appeared in His Dark Materials, which is also a HBO original series.

Additionally, THR shot down rumors that True Detective veteran Mahershala Ali will play Joel. But apparently “Ali did circle the role,” without ever making a deal with the network. For now, the role remains uncast.
Neil Druckmann, the writer of the original game, is producing The Last of Us with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin. HBO hasn’t set a release date for the series yet.
