WandaVision Creator Talks About Monica Rambeau’s Reintroduction

Last week’s Episode 4 of WandaVision saw the official return of Monica Rambeau in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many years have passed since fans first saw her in Captain Marvel, and now the daughter of Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau is a full-grown woman beside a SWORD agent. And even though we first meet her as “Geraldine” in Disney Plus’ latest series, her real identity becomes clear after clashing with Wanda. While talking with ETWandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer discussed the importance of bringing back Monica in Episode 4 after Thanos’ blip.

“Our priority was introducing Monica,” she said. “That was always what we wanted to do well at the top of the show. Second to that, our priority was the 180 of this episode being entirely separate from what we’ve seen,” Schaeffer said. “But we also wanted to answer the question of, ‘Where are we in the MCU timeline?’ So this idea seemed to satisfy all of those things all at once. It set up tonally that we’re in a dramatic scenario, a more grounded scenario. We learned so much about Monica and what she’s dealing with in that cold open. And then, of course, it’s always exciting to be able to approach MCU canon and shed new light on it.”

Schaeffer also said that she didn’t decide on Maria’s death lightly, given the character importance in Captain Marvel. However, she felt that it worked for Monica’s character. You can watch the full interview in the player below.

Schaeffer then took on Darcy Lewis’s role in the show and what she has been up to after Thor: The Dark World.

“With Darcy Lewis, it was really important to us that we show that eight years is a long time, and she has accomplished a lot and is a different person,” Schaeffer explained. “So the fans enjoying her moment where she asserted herself as a doctor, it’s a teeny tiny moment, but it was important to me and my partners on this.”

She then went on to add that they “did a lot of brainstorming about where the heck Darcy’s been and what she’s been up to. There were a lot of ideas that didn’t make it into the show, but they helped us in creating this new version of her.” Schaeffer declined to elaborate on those discarded ideas, but she stated that both Darcy and Jimmy Woo were ‘great sources of joy’ during the show’s development.

The first episodes of WandaVision are already available on Disney+. The next one will debut on Friday, Feb. 12.
