Netflix is Developing a Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series

Last year, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie blindsided audiences when it earned decent reviews and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year before the pandemic hit. Now, the film’s success has paved the way for the pint-sized speedster’s return to the small screen. According to The Wrap, Netflix has ordered a new animated series called Sonic Prime.

Netflix has already ordered 24 episodes of the show, which will be presented in 3D animation. Viewers will tag along with Sonic as he embarks on “a journey of self-discovery and redemption” that promises to cater to fans of all ages, though its target audience is between the ages of six and 11. On the series, Sonic will encounter a “strange new multiverse” whose fate “rests in his gloved hands.”

SEGA is working on Sonic Prime with WildBrain Studios, the same Vancouver-based animation house behind Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego series and Cartoon Network’s Mega Man: Fully Charged. Additionally, Ben 10 creators Man of Action Entertainment is onboard as executive producers and showrunners.

This won’t be the first time that Sonic has starred in his own animated series. Throughout the ‘90s, DIC Entertainment produced three different Sonic cartoons, all of which featured Jaleel White as the voice of the character. The most recent series, Sonic Boom, aired on Cartoon Network from 2014 until 2017. Paramount is also currently developing a sequel to last year’s film, with Jeff Fowler returning to direct.

Sonic Prime will premiere on Netflix in 2022.
