This weekend, Javicia Leslie will finally make her debut as The CW’s new Batwoman. Unfortunately, fans shouldn’t expect to see her interacting with the Arrowverse’s other heroes anytime soon. According to TVLine, The CW has scrapped its plans for a two-hour crossover event that would have featured Leslie’s Scarlet Knight teaming up with Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman.
The crossover has been in the works since before Ruby Rose vacated her role as the original Batwoman last May. Leslie confirmed that the ongoing pandemic is to blame for the network’s decision. But this doesn’t mean that the crossover between her own show and Superman and Lois is never going to happen. Instead, the series’ casts and crews will just have to wait until it’s safer to work together on the same set. Still, Leslie confessed her disappointment over not getting a chance to team up with the cast of Black Lightning, which kicks off its fourth and final season next month.
“I’m so heartbroken about the COVID situation because I know that it’s Black Lightning‘s last season. And I would have loved to do a crossover with them,” said Leslie. “Nafessa [Williams] and Jordan [Calloway] are really good friends of mine, and it would have been great to play with them and be superheroes all on the same show. That would have been epic.”
“Whatever show that has Black people on it, I’m going to do these crossovers with because I just want it to be a super Black crossover,” added Leslie.

Black Lightning isn’t the only Arrowverse series coming to an end this year. Supergirl is also expected to premiere its own final season in a few months, which seemingly rules out the possibility of Kara Danvers returning to Gotham City. Regardless, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries sounds open to having Melissa Benoist appear in a guest-starring role in the future.
“We’re not really able to cross over because physically, we can’t cross crews due to the fear of exposure to COVID,” said Dries. “So if Supergirl weren’t ending this year, I would say there would be more of a possibility. But I’m afraid that at least this year, we’re not going to be able to tap into that dynamic.”
Batwoman season 2 premieres this Sunday, January 17 at 8pm on The CW. Superman and Lois debuts on Tuesday, February 23.
