Game of Thrones’ House of the Dragon Prequel Reveals New Concept Art

Next year, HBO will expand its Game of Thrones universe with House of the Dragon, a new prequel series focusing on the Targaryen family line. Naturally, this means fans can expect to see more than three dragons flying around overhead. And to tease the impending start of production, the official Game of Thrones Twitter account has released new concept art that offers an early look at these winged beasties. You can check them out for yourself below.

The new designs show both a dragon’s full body along with a close-up of the head in profile. It’s not clear if these images depict the same dragon or two completely separate creatures. But unlike Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion (who all appeared on the flagship series) the new dragon(s) stands out with crimson red scales. House of the Dragon draws influence from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, which picks up 300 years before Game of Thrones and shows how different Targaryens ruled over Westeros.

Martin co-created the upcoming series with Colony creator Ryan Condal. Last year, HBO committed to at least 10 episodes, with GoT veteran Miguel Sapochnik directing the pilot and other chapters. More recently, the producers cast Paddy Considine to star as King Viserys I, who becomes the new King of Westeros. According to his character description, Viserys is “warm, kind, and decent,” but he might be in over his head.

House of the Dragon will begin filming in the U.K. next year. The series is expected to debut on HBO sometime in 2022.
