BBC Reveals New Dalek Design For Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks

This year’s Doctor Who holiday special is bringing the Doctor’s greatest foes, the Daleks, back in a big way. As implied by the name of Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks, there’s been a shift in their power structure. There’s also a new look as well. Radio Times has debuted the redesigned Daleks on the cover of its newest issue.

However, Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall told Radio Times that fans won’t have to worry about these Daleks replacing the previous incarnations.

“There’s always a pressure when you refresh any Doctor Who monster,” said Chibnall. “But equally that’s part of the job and that’s part of what keeps it new and interesting…You’re never replacing what’s gone before, you’re just adding a new variant…It wasn’t like we were saying ‘these will replace the bronze Daleks!’ It’s just this story is about these black and red Daleks, which light up at night and do all sorts of things.”

Doctor Who executive producer Matt Strevens also weighed in on the redesign.

“You want to contemporise them, and make them hold up to scrutiny under modern filming techniques, and to look as high-end as you possibly can,” noted Strevens. “You can’t stray too far from the classic design – but then what can you do within that? How can you make them feel different, and relevant, and sexy, and lethal as well?”

Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks will air on BBC America “in the holiday season.”
