During its first season, Stargirl introduced a new generation of the Justice Society. But now, it’s time for one of the old school Justice Society heroes to return. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that comedian Jim Gaffigan has joined the cast as Thunderbolt.
Thunderbolt is “a magical, electrical, fun-loving, wish-granting pink imp from the mysterious land of Bahdnesia.” Essentially, he’s a genie who lives inside of a magical pen. Within the comics, Thunderbolt emerged whenever Johnny Thunder or his successor, Jakeem Thunder, called upon him with the magic word: Cei-U.
EW notes that Thunderbolt will be portrayed via CGI, and only Gaffigan’s voice will be used. The story also says that “the wishes he grants often cause more trouble than the wish-asker would ever expect. But despite his somewhat constant supernatural disasters, the Thunderbolt’s heart is always in the right place, even if it is wounded by the friends he has lost throughout his long existence.”

The first season of Stargirl teased Thunderbolt’s introduction when Courtney stole a magical pen from Justice Society headquarters. However, she didn’t seem to realize its significance at the time.
Nick Tarabay is also joining the cast of Stargirl as Eclipso, with Jonathan Cake as the Shade. Production for season 2 has begun, and the series will return to The CW in 2021.
