Executive Producer Is Already Working on His Dark Materials Season 3

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t read the His Dark Materials trilogy yet!

In a few days, His Dark Materials will debut its sophomore season. Even though HBO and BBC have yet to greenlight a third one, it seems that there is a lot of optimism about it happening for real. In a recent interview with Radio Times, HDM executive producer Joel Collins teased that their most brilliant minds are already trying to solve the puzzle of adapting the events of The Amber Spyglass, the third book in the trilogy written by English author Philip Pullman.

“The world of season three is exceedingly weird and complicated,” Collins said. “The complexity is stepped up in terms of the story, the visuals and the narrative. There’s very few of us in a very secret group doing early work, which is exciting and complex. We’re trying to solve the puzzle away from all the eyes and the noise. And it’s that kind of really precious time you get before hundreds of people start asking questions.”

The story of The Amber Spyglass will introduce the Mulefa, who can see Dust with the naked eye and use large seedpods as wheels. They will play a pivotal role in the adventures of Lyra Belacqua.

“It’s all complicated, but I utterly have an idea of the Mulefa and what their world is, Asriel’s Republic is an amazing place,” Collins said. “We obviously go to the land of the dead, and what an exciting thing to think about and journey through. It’s literally a huge, complicated and brilliantly fun puzzle.”

Given the story’s complexity and the many major characters on stage at once, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if the showrunners split The Amber Spyglass into two seasons.

His Dark Materials Season 2 will debut on BBC on Sunday, Nov. 8. In the US, the show will hit HBO and HBO Max on Monday, November 16.
