Nicolas Cage to Voice a Dragon Named Vern in Amazon’s Highfire

Amazon is working on a brand new fantasy series called Highfire. The series will adapt Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer’s recently released eponymous book, an adult novel which, according to a Guardian review,  mixes the tense atmosphere from True Detective with Swamp Thing‘s eerie creatures. Deadline brings word that the upcoming gritty crime-thriller story will feature Nicolas Cage as the main character, a vodka-drinking dragon who goes by “Vern” and lives alone in the bayous of Louisiana. Vern’s life will be turned upside-down after meeting Squib, a human teen who is running booze for the local mob.

Besides voicing the titular dragon who also loves to spend his days watching Flashdance, Cage will also produce the series.

Furthermore, the official description of the Highfire novel reads:

“In the days of yore, he flew the skies and scorched angry mobs—now he hides from swamp tour boats and rises only with the greatest reluctance from his Laz-Z-Boy recliner. Laying low in the bayou, this once-magnificent fire-breather has been reduced to lighting Marlboros with nose sparks, swilling Absolut in a Flashdance T-shirt, and binging Netflix in a fishing shack. For centuries, he struck fear in hearts far and wide as Wyvern, Lord Highfire of the Highfire Eyrie—now he goes by Vern. However…he has survived, unlike the rest. He is the last of his kind, the last dragon. Still, no amount of vodka can drown the loneliness in his molten core. Vern’s glory days are long gone. Or are they?”

Considering he is apparently a dragon named Wyvern, we’ll have to see how many limbs he has. Amazon has yet to announce the release date of Highfire.
