For six seasons, The Powerpuff Girls flew high on Cartoon Network. Now, the pre-teen heroes are poised to make a comeback in live-action. Variety is reporting that a modern update of the series is in the works at The CW.
Created by Craig McCracken, the original cartoon premiered on Cartoon Network in 1998 and ended its run in 2005. Over the course of 78 episodes, the girls battled a wide assortment of villains across the city of Townsville. Chiefest among them was Mojo Jojo, a mutant chimpanzee. Additionally, The Powerpuff Girls was the last Hanna-Barbera cartoon before Warner Bros. Animation absorbed the studio in 2001.

Not surprisingly, The CW’s live-action reboot is taking the characters in a more angsty, Riverdale-inspired direction. According to the logline, this new version casts the girls as “disillusioned twentysomethings” as opposed to young children. They also “resent having lost their childhood” to being superheroines. But when the world calls on them again, they’ll have to reunite the team. Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno, will executive produce the series with Heather Regnier. They’ll also be joined by Greg Berlanti, the mastermind behind The CW’s Arrowverse. Berlanti will executive produce alongside Sarah Schechter, and David Madden through his Berlanti Productions banner.
The CW has not yet set a premiere date for The Powerpuff Girls.
