Marvel Explores the Symbiotes’ History in a New Spider-Man: Maximum Venom Short

The symbiote god Knull is a fairly new addition to the Marvel Universe. Created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, the character first appeared in the pages of Venom #3 in 2018. Because of this, some fans might not be familiar with his origins. But now, it looks like the character might be making his way to Disney XD’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom. And to catch viewers up on his history, Marvel has produced a new animated short film that ties into the events of the series.

The Venom symbiote (sans host) narrates, and immediately begins sharing the secrets of its people. Billions of years ago, Knull warred across the cosmos, locked in an eternal battle with the Celestials who wanted to fill the primordial universe with light. But since Knull represented “darkness itself,” he had a few objections to these plans. With this, he created living weapons known as the Klyntar, precursors to the symbiotes, to combat the Celestials.

After his victory, Knull abandoned the Klyntar, which were left to drift through space until they were discovered by a new explorer who promised them a “truly symbiotic relationship” and helped them multiply among hosts of another species. Unfortunately, the peace didn’t last, and the Klyntar’s latest betrayal set them on a course for universal domination.

Spider-Man: Maximum Venom premiered on Disney XD back in April, with new episodes dropping on a monthly basis. According to a recent promo for the series, the next episode will air on Sunday, August 16 at 9pm.
