Watchmen and The Mandalorian Earn Several 2020 Emmy Nominations

Aside from Game of Thrones, Emmy voters tend to overlook genre series in the race for TV’s top prize. However, genre is king this year, as HBO’s Watchmen landed 26 Emmy nominations to lead all other shows. That includes the Best Limited Series award, as well as acting nominations for Regina King, Jean Smart, Jeremy Irons, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jovan Adepo, and Louis Gossett Jr. in the leading and supporting actress and actor categories.

Watchmen also dominated in the Best Directing for a Limited Series or TV movie with three directors, Nicole Kassell, Steph Green, and Stephen Williams competing against each other. Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson share the series’ sole writing nomination.

Disney+’s original Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, got off to a strong start with 15 Emmy nominations. That includes a Best Drama Series nomination, as well as a nod for guest star Giancarlo Esposito. However, Taika Waititi had an acting nomination as well for Best Voice-Over Performance for his turn as IG-11. Additionally, The Mandalorian dominated technical categories including production design, editing, makeup,  music composition, sound editing, sound mixing, stunt coordination, and special visual effects.

The Mandalorian also received nominations for Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. The series may be a longshot in the Best Drama category, but it seems likely to clean up in the other fields.

ABC will air the 2020 Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 20.
