Gugu Mbatha-Raw Discusses Her Experience on Marvel’s Loki Series

Back in March, Loki was one of countless TV shows forced to suspend production due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Prior to the shutdown, the series had assembled an impressive supporting cast to star opposite Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief. One of these new additions was Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who will make her MCU debut when Loki finally arrives on Disney+. The identity of her character is still under wraps. But during an interview with Variety, Mbatha-Raw shared what it was like to work on the show in Atlanta before the pandemic intervened.

Mbatha-Raw admitted that she had to go to school on the MCU before cameras started rolling on Loki, but fortunately, this won’t be her first time working with Hiddleston. In fact, the two actors go way back.

“I can’t confess to being a major MCU nerd,” said Mbatha-Raw.  “Obviously, it’s a big part of our culture, so I had a huge awareness of it and it’s funny because I actually went to drama school at the same time as Tom Hiddleston. Ten years ago when I first came out here to do a TV pilot, Undercovers, he was shooting the first Thor at the same time. I remember him telling me about this experience of this new movie that he was doing.”

Mbatha-Raw also praised the directorial work of Kate Herron, who previously helmed Sex Education for Netflix. And apparently, Herron is infusing Loki with the same character-driven sensibilities that garnered her acclaim for that series.

“She’s so fresh and interesting,” Mbatha-Raw added. “I feel like even though you’re dealing with this big universe, she still makes it feel very intimate. She just brings it back down to character and moments and emotions.”

Loki will premiere on Disney+ in early 2021.
