Regina King Won’t Do Watchmen Season 2 Without Damon Lindelof

Earlier this year, Damon Lindelof formally vacated his role as Watchmen’s showrunner while giving HBO his blessing to continue the series without him. The network has yet to make an official announcement about whether they’ll actually develop a second season. But now, the show’s leading lady has confirmed that her own return is contingent on Lindelof coming back as well.

Regina King, who headlined the series as Angela Abar, recently joined Reese Witherspoon for a virtual installment of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. When Watchmen came up, King acknowledged that continuing the show seems like a no-brainer, given the first season’s success. Regardless, she’s planning to follow Lindelof’s lead.

“Honestly, I feel like I think HBO would want it back in a heartbeat,” said King. “But if [showrunner] Damon Lindelof doesn’t see an entry point for Season 2, I think that the possibilities are infinite. But I feel that if Damon doesn’t see it, then it’s going to be a no for me.”

King previously expressed her belief that another season of Watchmen wouldn’t be worth doing if it wasn’t on the same level of quality as the first nine episodes. Although she didn’t rule out reprising her role then, it sounds like that’s exactly what she’s doing now. Hearing this might disappoint a lot of fans, especially considering how season 1 ended. The series’ final scene showed Angela eating an egg that may or may not have given her Dr. Manhattan’s superpowers. But before we could see if this change took effect, the episode cut to black, leaving it up to the viewer to decide whether Angela inherited Jon Osterman’s abilities.

Recent national conversations surrounding race in America have brought Watchmen back into the headlines during the last month. Critics have once again praised the show for bringing heightened awareness to the Black Wall Street Massacre of 1921. Watchmen’s depiction of this event, easily one of the worst incidents of racial violence in the country’s history, memorably opened the series back in October. HBO also streamed all nine episodes for free last weekend in honor of Juneteenth.
