At least quarantine forced George R.R. Martin to stay at home and focus on finishing The Winds of Winter. The author of the A Song of Ice and Fire literary saga has been working on it for almost a decade, but it seems that it’s only now that things are coming together. In a post on his blog, Martin gave some updates on the sixth installment in the high fantasy saga.
“If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write,” he wrote. “I am spending long hours every day on The Winds of Winter and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week.”
The author went on to add that this is going to be a “huge book,” and the way is still long ahead of him. Yet he shared his optimism about finishing it for 2021.

Martin even hinted at some of the content he is working on. His words seem to indicate some of the chapters he has already finished, with some of the well-known protagonists — to both the fans of the literary saga and the Game of Thrones series — like Cersei, Tyrion, and Ser Barristan.
“Of late I have been visiting with Cersei, Asha, Tyrion, Ser Barristan, and Areo Hotah,” he added. “I will be dropping back into Braavos next week. I have bad days, which get me down, and good days, which lift me up, but all in all I am pleased with the way things are doing.”
The author also revealed that when he was writing A Storm of Swords back in 1990, he wrote 150 pages a month. While everyone understands that this pace is perhaps too much for Martin nowadays — given his age and many duties — is it too much to ask for the book to be released after almost ten years of waiting?
According to Martin, The House of the Dragon prequel series is “still flying along wonderfully.” He is also producing feature films from his stories Sandkings and The Ice Dragon and The Lost Lands. In the meantime, he is involved in the relaunch of the Wild Cards TV show and in bringing Nnedi Okorafor’s Who Fears Death to the small screen.
