Batwoman Showrunner Explains Why They Went With a New Character

In just a few days, the world of Batwoman fans has been turned upside down. First, Ruby Rose made her exit from the show. Then, The CW announced that the character of Kate Kane wouldn’t be coming back to the series either. Now, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries shed some light on the decision not to recast the role of Kate Kane in a recent Q&A for the ATX Festival At Home (via TVLine).

“To be honest with you, I did consider the ‘soap opera version’ [of recasting Kate] for a hot minute, because selfishly we already had a couple episodes written, and transition-wise it would be seamless,” she said. “But upon further reflection — and I think Greg [Berlanti] helped me make this call — he’s like, ‘I think we should just reboot Batwoman as a different character.'”

In Season 2, Batwoman‘s cape and cowl will be taken up by someone whose name is — for now — Ryan Wilder.

Casting call leaks revealed a few details about the new character who will become the next Scarlet Knight. She is a “female, mid-late 20s, any ethnicity,” but she is also “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed.” In the Q&A, the showrunner revealed a few new things about Kate Kane’s successor. Ryan is living in a van together with her plant, and she “is maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.”
