Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the season finale of Batwoman!
Because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, The CW’s Batwoman ended its inaugural season a little earlier than expected. However, the new season 1 finale gave fans something they’ve been wanting to see since the series was first announced. Bruce Wayne has finally made his way to the Arrowverse with actor Warren Christie playing the missing Dark Knight. Technically, Christie is really playing Tommy Elliot/Hush in disguise as Bruce Wayne. But in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries shed new light on how she and her team planned to introduce Hush as an impostor Bruce Wayne.
According to Dries, getting clearance even to consider this twist took extra negotiations with DC itself. She also reveal her initial plan was to fool the audience into thinking Hush really was Bruce.
“Yes, it felt very much like a negotiation,” said Dries. “They were ready to play ball, but there’s this one caveat, which is that we needed to be on the A-side of the information. Meaning, originally, we wanted it that Bruce Wayne shows up, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,’ [then] reveal ‘Holy s***, that’s Tommy Elliot.’ But that wasn’t in the cards for us. So we were like, ‘What if we show you the A-side? We’re all in on it so nobody’s thinking it’s Bruce Wayne from the audience’s point of view. We’re not getting anybody’s hopes up.’ And boom, we get to see how this lands on our heroes and watch them react to it.”

Dries also admitted that she didn’t have a dream casting pick for Bruce Wayne when she first began work on the series. Regardless, she explained how they chose Christie, a veteran of SYFY’s Alphas.
“His jawline is perfect,” joked Dries. “No, he’s such a good actor and when I saw he was available, I was like, ‘Hello, yes, Warren Christie, please!’ So I called him and told him what would be happening and was like, ‘Please, please, please do this.’ And he loved the idea because he’s a Batman fan and he has a kid and he thought it would be cool to tell his kid he’s playing Bruce Wayne. It kind of just worked out great.”
Batwoman’s first season is available to stream on The CW’s official website and app. The network is hoping to premiere the second season in January 2021.
