Since 2014, Matt Ryan has been bringing John Constantine to life on the small screen, first on NBC’s short-lived Constantine series and then in the Arrowverse, where he currently appears as a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow. Now, Ryan is hoping that J.J. Abrams will allow him to continue playing the occult detective on HBO Max’s Justice League Dark series.
Neither Abrams nor HBO Max have actually confirmed which characters will be featured in Justice League Dark. But Ryan was nonetheless asked about the upcoming series during a recent interview with Den of Geek. He acknowledged that his six-year stint as Constantine doesn’t necessarily guarantee that he will get the role. However, Ryan is hoping that the producers will at least grant him an audition.
“I’m a theater actor, you know?” said Ryan. “That’s where I spent most of my life. I always say to them, ‘Just get me in the room.’ And then if they don’t want me for the role that’s their choice. But I would be very disappointed if a project like that went ahead without even sitting down and seeing what I could do with the material.”

Because Justice League Dark will airing on HBO Max, the show may be less family-friendly than the Arrowverse series. It’s also possible that Justice League Dark will take place in a completely separate continuity. Fortunately, Ryan isn’t viewing this as an obstacle.
“Even though the material is different and I know that I’m gonna have to adhere to the material in my head, I have to stay in that world of John Constantine and all of those comics that I love,” added Ryan. “So even though I have to dance to these different tunes, that’s what I want to think about, and that’s what I fell in love with. Whatever happens, John Constantine is a great character. I have no right to this character, no ownership over him. I’m an actor! How many people play Hamlet or Macbeth? I feel lucky to have played him, but there’s a part of me artistically that wants to dive into a part of John that I want to explore, and hopefully that opportunity comes!”
