Star Trek: Short Treks Is Coming To Blu-ray and DVD In June

With self-quarantining becoming a worldwide phenomenon thanks to the Coronavirus, people are spending a lot of time on streaming services. But for more frugal consumers, home video releases are the way to go. And that’s why Star Trek fans without a CBS All Access subscription will be thrilled by this latest announcement. The Star Trek: Short Treks anthology series will be available to own on Blu-ray and DVD on June 2.

Short Treks debuted in late 2018. Since then, it has served as a placeholder for fans in between seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. Despite their short length, the episodes were praised for the ways they explored the mythology of the Star Trek universe. Some episodes featured appearances by Discovery cast members Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, and Anson Mount. Familiar faces like Rainn Wilson, Rosa Salazar, and H. Jon Benjamin also showed up in other installments.

The Blu-ray collects nine episodes of the series. However, noticeably absent from the list is “Children of Mars.” That episode aired as Short Treks’ second season finale in January and also set up the events of Star Trek: Picard. It’s possible that the network is going to include this episode on Picard’s first-season Blu-ray collection. Unfortunately, this isn’t specified in the press release.

The collection also boasts a litany of special features. Fans can dive into the making of certain episodes by watching interviews with members of the behind-the-scenes crew. These include Wilson (who also directed the episode he starred in), writer Michael Chabon, and prop master Mario Moreira, who handled the return of the Tribbles in “The Trouble with Edward.” Executive producer Alex Kurtzman also appears in his own making-of featurette. Additionally, he provides audio commentary alongside Jenny Lumet for the “Runaway” episode.
