James Wan is Producing an Aquaman Animated Miniseries for HBO Max

Aquaman 2 isn’t arriving until 2022. But fortunately, fans might not have to wait that long to see the king of Atlantis back in action. Via The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan is teaming up with Warner Bros. Animation for a new Aquaman animated miniseries on HBO Max.

The miniseries is titled Aquaman: King of Atlantis and it will consist of three episodes. According to THR, the story will kick off with Arthur Curry assuming his rightful place as the ruler of the titular undersea kingdom. However, his half-brother, Orm, is scheming to take the throne for himself. Arthur must also deal with problems caused by reckless surface dwellers as well as “ancient evils threatening danger perpetually.” The series will also feature appearances by the hero’s two most trusted confidants, Vulko and Mera.

It sounds like this series could easily fill in the gap between Wan’s 2018 film and its upcoming sequel. Regardless, it’s unclear if there’s any real connection. THR also makes no mention of whether any of the movie’s stars, including Jason Momoa, will reprise their roles. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the show’s version of Mera is described as Arthur’s “on-again, off-again love interest.”

Warner Bros. and HBO Max have also recruited Victor Courtright (ThunderCats Roar) and Marly Halpern-Grase (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to showrun and co-executive produce the series. Wan will executive produce the show alongside Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Warner Bros. Animation’s Rob Hackett and Sam Register.

“This DC property is a fan-favorite rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines,” said Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content. “On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”
