Jean Smart is Playing Silk Spectre in HBO’s Watchmen Series

At Comic-Con, HBO unveiled a trailer for Watchmen that revealed the return of Doctor Manhattan. However, he’s not the only character from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic comic who will be appearing in the show. Jeremy Irons is portraying Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, and now, it’s confirmed that Jean Smart is playing an older version of Silk Spectre a.k.a. Laurie Juspeczyk.

IGN broke the story, and noted that showrunner Damon Lindelof said that Smart’s character is in fact Laurie. However, she now goes by Laurie Blake, because she’s adopted the last name of her true father, Edward Blake a.k.a. The Comedian. Laurie is also an FBI agent on the show.

The Watchmen Comic-Con trailer also briefly showed off the Owl ship that belonged to Daniel Dreiberg, the second Nite-Owl. By the end of the original comic, Laurie and Dan were a couple. They had also ditched their real names and assumed new identities. Lindelof has indicated that he’ll be keeping the comic’s story as the history of this world. Laurie’s inclusion on the show raises some questions about what happened to Daniel. Aside from Ozymandias, Doctor Manhattan, and Silk Spectre, Nite-Owl was the only main character to survive the story.

HBO will premiere Watchmen later this year.
