Gremlins Animated Prequel Series Heading To WarnerMedia’s Streaming

It’s been nearly 35 years since Joe Dante’s Gremlins first hit theaters back in 1984. But WarnerMedia is set to bring back the troublesome little critters in a new animated series that will explore their origins.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service has picked up a new animated series based on the cult classic film. Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will focus on an adult-oriented audience and take place in Shanghai during the early 20th century. It will follow a 10-year old by the name of Sam Wing (the shopkeeper from the film), and how he acquired the mysterious Mogwai creature, Gizmo. The first season will run ten episodes.

Along the way, Sam will come across a thief by the name of Elle, as well as colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. Additionally, they’ll also come across a power-hungry industrialist, who has his own army of evil Gremlins.

Tze Chun, who previously worked on Gotham, will serve as the lead writer for Secrets of the Mogwai. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce, alongside Sam Register, Chun and Robot Chicken’s Brendan Hay. The series doesn’t currently have a release date.

Secrets of the Mogwai is the latest Gremlins announcement to come from Warner Bros. this year. Last month, the company confirmed that it would re-release the 1984 movie in 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray format. It’s expected to arrive on October 1, with a number of extras.
