New Hellraiser Series in Development from It and Ready Player One Producers

Pinhead is about to make his return to the forefront of pop culture. Only this time, he’ll be terrorizing people on the small screen. Deadline brings word that the long-running Hellraiser franchise is about to get its first-ever TV series.

The new series is coming from It producer Roy Lee and Ready Player One producer Dan Farah. They will join longtime rights-holders Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, and Eric Gardner in bringing the project to fruition. Apparently, the aim is to use the previous films in the franchise as a “launch pad” for this new venture. However, they aren’t sure yet if it will adopt an anthology format or air as a conventional serialized story. The producers’ top priority right now is to find a showrunner before they start pitching it to networks or streaming platforms.

The original Hellraiser film premiered in 1987. Writer and director Clive Barker adapted the story from his own novella, The Hellbound Heart, which was released a year earlier. The movie introduced audiences to Pinhead and the rest of the Cenobites. It was followed by three theatrical sequels and six direct-to-video installments. Doug Bradley originated the role of Pinhead and last appeared as the character in Hellraiser: Hellworld in 2005.

Deadline also notes that Hellraiser’s film rights and TV rights actually belong to separate entities. Spyglass Media is currently handling the franchise’s theatrical future, and plans are in motion to bring Pinhead back to the big screen as well. Last month, it was reported that David Goyer has been tasked to write and produce a Hellraiser reboot.
