For eight seasons, the Night King and his army of the dead have threatened to overrun the realm of men. In the Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3 promo, the ultimate battle between the living and the dead is at hand. While the clips don’t show anything from the actual battle, they do create an mistakable sensation of dread.
Between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, there are two armies, two full-grown dragons, the remaining great houses of the North, and the last of the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. It’s not enough to defeat the White Walkers, and they know it. Their only hope is to lure the Night King into a trap while using Bran as bait. However, not even Bran knows if dragon fire can stop the Night King. Apparently, it’s never been tried before. The Night King also has a dragon of his own, and that alone may doom the living.

Last night’s episode brought closure to several characters, including Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister. There’s no guarantee that all of them will survive the battle to come. In fact, there’s not even a guarantee that the living will defeat the dead. There are still 3 episodes left after next week’s installment, and it might be anticlimactic if the dead go down too easily.
