DC Universe’s Swamp Thing Adds Adrienne Barbeau

Wes Craven’s take on Swamp Thing received mixed reviews when it hit theaters in 1982. However, fans and critics seemed to agree that Adrienne Barbeau’s performance was one of the high points. This year, Barbeau will return to the character’s orbit in a new role. The actress announced via Twitter that she’s joining DC Universe’s upcoming Swamp Thing series. You can check out what she had to say below.

Barbeau starred in the original film as Alice Cable. Her character was a gender-flipped version of Matthew Cable, the government agent tasked with protecting Alec and Linda Holland before the accident that turned Alec into Swamp Thing. Alice served as Swamp Thing’s love interest in the movie, though she was replaced in the 1989 sequel by Heather Locklear’s Abby Arcane.

Aside from Craven’s film, Barbeau made a name for herself as an ‘80s scream queen by appearing in films like The Fog, Creepshow, and The Thing. During the next decade, she voiced Catwoman in several Batman-related cartoons set in the DC animated universe. In more recent years, she has primarily guest-starred in episodes of procedural series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, and CSI: NY.

Barbeau reflected on her Swamp Thing experience in an interview for the film’s Blu-ray re-release (via USA Today) in 2013. “It was whimsical and charming and lovely,” she said. “I didn’t see it as a horror film — I guess I don’t see it as a horror film to this day, actually. It’s Beauty and the Beast — it’s more of a fantasy or fairy tale maybe in my mind.”
