Umbrella Academy season 1 episode 4 recap

The Umbrella Academy Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

Depictions of the afterlife aren’t unfamiliar to the masses, but utilizing those that have passed on against your enemies is a more unique quality altogether. One that The Umbrella Academy’s flamboyant black sheep Klaus displayed beautifully against Hazel and Cha-Cha. In fact, all of the Hargreeves sons got in on the action, criss-crossing the city as clues unraveled. Luther and Diego showed their most cohesion yet, but nothing good is exempt from tragedy. Life always finds a way.

Something Worth Feeling

The Hargreeves sisters weren’t excluded from the cooperation party. Vanya wakes up on Leonard’s couch to discover that she is out of her anxiety pills. Leonard calms her, offering her uncharacteristic support as he walks her to rehearsal. Things start to get stalkerish when Allison finds Leonard inside Vanya’s apartment. He explains his actions away, claiming he was simply returning Vanya’s keys. Allison remains suspicious but puts it aside to grab a drink with Vanya after informing her of Mom’s death. Vanya’s doubts about Allison’s perception of Leonard are confirmed when she finds flowers from him in her bedroom. She calls to thank him and make a breakfast date. Leonard accepts as he dumps a stolen bottle of Vanya’s medication down his sink drain.

Just Blaze

Klaus is proving to be quite the headache for Hazel and Cha-Cha. Each of their methods of torture only provide more pleasure for him. He laughs in their face as he deems himself the only sibling no one will notice is gone. The duo grow increasingly more frustrated until they decide to go through Klaus’s pockets. Hazel gets Klaus to talk by destroying his drugs and eating his “special chocolate” as he begins the early stages of drug withdrawal. He finally breaks, telling them about Number 5’s obsession with the Meritech glass eye.

Elsewhere, Number 5 finally confronts the Meritech doctor after phasing into his car. The doc is running an insurance fraud scheme where he builds prosthetics for fake clients and sells them off the books. He still keeps records of the buyers despite the illegality of his actions and 5 forces him back to Meritech to retrieve the client list. They arrive to see Meritech explode after Hazel and Cha-Cha set the building on fire in a fit of THC euphoria. Det. Patch discovers part of Cha-Cha’s mask in the rubble, a match book from the pair’s hotel and a message written in ash on 5’s van reading “Your Brother Says Hi.”

The Hargreeves Boys

Luther and Diego find themselves on similar paths despite separate starts as they search for Number 5. Diego returns to the mansion after seeking emotional consolement from Patch. He has vengeance on the mind whereas Luther still sees himself as the leader of the team despite the Academy disbanding years ago. He relives the mission that almost took his life and led to his body morphing into that of a beast before pushing Allison away and getting to work.

The teamup gets off to a bad start when the two fight over Luther’s loyalty to Reginald despite causing his transformation. Pogo reprimands them and the two leave the mansion. A quick stop by 5’s van leads them to look for their brother at a library. Diego poses that Luther should look inward and figure out why he stayed rather than question why the others left. That introspection is cut short when they find Number 5 passed out drunk with Dolores in his arms. 5 tells them about Hazel and Cha-Cha as they bring him back to Diego’s apartment. Once there, Al informs Diego that Patch asked him to meet her at Hazel and Cha-Cha’s hotel. Diego rushes off, leaving Luther to care for 5.

Faced With Death

Hazel and Cha-Cha are content to end the world by killing Number 5, but Klaus isn’t satisfied with being tied up in a flophouse closet. Ben’s spirit talks him through his drug withdrawal. He begins seeing the spirit of a Russian woman when Hazel and Cha-Cha return. They leave him in the dark, sparking memories of his father leaving him alone in a mausoleum as a child. Ben finally gets Klaus to focus on using his line to the dead when they learn that the Russian woman was one of Hazel and Cha-Cha’s victims. The two freeze at Klaus’ mention of her name.

Soon Klaus is surrounded by Hazel and Cha-Cha’s victims. Even Syd joins in the death day story circle. Klaus reveals that Hazel lied to Cha-Cha about killing multiple people on previous jobs. The hitmen regroup in the bathroom as Patch begins searching the exterior of the hotel. Klaus notices her and gets her attention by banging his head into a table. Patch frees Klaus before having a standoff with Hazel. Klaus escapes through the air vent, taking Hazel’s briefcase with him. Hazel surrenders to Patch but Cha-Cha shoots her in the back, killing her. Hazel freaks at the loss of the briefcase, but Klaus has no idea what he possesses. He accidentally activates it, disappearing into thin air. Diego arrives and crumbles when he finds Patch’s body. A second important woman in his life has passed in as many nights, compounding Diego’s already broken psyche.
