American Gods May Get An Early Season 3 Renewal

It’s been almost two years since the first season of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods debuted on STARZ. The second season will finally arrive next month. But if STARZ has its way, it’s going to be a much shorter wait for the third season.

According to Deadline, season 3 is almost “a divine certainty.” The report quotes a source close to the show as saying “we didn’t make season 2 of American Gods not to make a season 3.” However, there are a few conditions that have to be met before STARZ will renew the series. First, a new showrunner has to be found, and the network wants “someone who can bring the ensemble series…in on budget and on time.”

Additionally, STARZ doesn’t want another two year gap between seasons. Whoever is chosen reportedly needs to have a “rock solid blueprint in place.”

One of the least likely candidates to serve as the showrunner is Gaiman himself. While the author of the original novel played a more hands on role in season 2, he may not have the same availability. In the interim, Gaiman signed an overall production deal with Amazon Studios. That pact will probably keep Gaiman busy for the foreseeable future.

Deadline’s report also indicated that the potential third season would adapt the Lakeside portion of the book. Within the novel, Shadow Moon lays low in Lakeside as the war between the Old Gods and the New Gods escalates.

American Gods season 2 will premiere on March 10.
