Glen Winter is Directing the Stargirl Pilot for DC Universe

With the casting process all but completed, DC Universe’s upcoming Stargirl series now has a director for its pilot. Via Heroic Hollywood, Glen Winter will be helming the show’s first episode, which is still without a release date on the streaming service.

Winter is no stranger to television series based on DC Comics superheroes. His resume boasts episodes of almost every DC related show on The CW. He made his directorial debut with an episode of Smallville in 2006 after initially working on that show as a cinematographer. After helming a dozen hours of Smallville, Winter went on to Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Winter also serves as a producer on each of those series. Most recently, he directed the “Dick Grayson” episode of Titans as well as the pilot for Doom Patrol, which will begin airing on DC Universe on February 15.

This won’t be Winter’s first time directing Stargirl for the small screen. He previously directed the first hour of the two-part Smallville episode “Absolute Justice” in 2010. That episode featured a modern take on the Justice Society, which included actress Britt Irvin’s portrayal of Stargirl. Geoff Johns, the co-creator and showrunner of Stargirl, penned the script for “Absolute Justice.”

Stargirl will be the fourth live-action series to premiere on DC Universe after Titans, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing. Brec Bassinger is playing the title character. Luke Wilson is playing S.T.R.I.P.E., alongside Joel McHale (Starman), Lou Ferrigno Jr. (Hourman), Henry Thomas (Dr. Mid-Nite), and Brian Stapf (Wildcat). Neil Hopkins (Sportsmaster), Joy Osmanski (Tigress), and Nelson Lee (Dragon King) will portray villainous members of the Injustice Society.

DC is expected to begin filming Stargirl later this year. What are your thoughts on Winter being chosen to direct the series’ pilot? Give us your impressions in the comment section below!
