The Flash Season 5 Episode 9: “Elseworlds – Part 1” Recap

Last week’s episode of The Flash seemingly revealed that Barry Allen’s daughter, Nora, was working with one of his greatest enemies. Nora was noticeably missing in the first part of the Elseworlds crossover event. However, the opening did repeat last week’s teaser scene, which took place on Earth-90. The older Barry Allen of that world was the last hero standing as the Monitor unleashed his power. But Barry had to flee to save his own life. On Earth-1, Dr. John Deegan was ridiculed and rejected by his colleagues, because they didn’t share his vision for the world. The Monitor saw something useful in Deegan’s ideas, and gave him the book he needed to reshape reality like a god.

Oliver Queen woke up in Barry Allen’s bed and his life. Much to Oliver’s shock, Barry’s wife, Iris, only recognized him as Barry. Meanwhile, Barry found himself in a sparring match with John Diggle before utilizing his Green Arrow skills. Back in Central City, Oliver mangled his first outing as the Flash and he accidentally activated Ivo’s android. Afterwards, Oliver reunited with Barry to figure out what was happening. Unfortunately, Team Flash was convinced that they had a shared psychosis and imprisoned them at STAR Labs.

Barry and Oliver had to utilize each others’ abilities to get out of the cell. They decided to head to Earth-38, and get Supergirl’s help to fix their problem. Iris confronted them, but Barry finally managed to convince his wife he was telling the truth before she let them escape. Cisco also had a disquieting vision of the Monitor, which shook his resolve.

On the Kent farm, Clark Kent and Lois Lane argued about their recent experience on Argo, and she expressed her desire to write a book about it. Kara told Clark about her forced departure from the DEO, after she refused to out herself as Supergirl. Lois was surprised by Oliver and Barry’s sudden appearance, but Kara immediately vouched for them. She also introduced them to her famous cousin, Superman; which caused Oliver to puff out his chest.

After explaining their situation, Oliver and Barry had a training session which allowed the real Flash to get some payback from their first crossover. The two heroes sulked about it for a few hours, before realizing that they had to start acting more like each other. Back on Earth-1, Ivo’s android, A.M.A.Z.O., wrecked havoc and mimicked the powers of Killer Frost and Elongated Man. Cisco traveled to Earth-38 to apologetically retrieve Barry and Oliver, while both Kara and Clark accompanied them home.

A.M.A.Z.O.

Even with the combined efforts of Superman, Supergirl, the Flash, and Green Arrow, A.M.A.Z.O. proved to be more than they could handle. An immediate assault on the android proved useless, and it copied their abilities too. Once it was infinitely more powerful, A.M.A.Z.O. tossed the heroes aside like they were nothing. As Oliver lured the android back, the heroes made a plan to hold it in place long enough to destroy it. However, that meant that Barry had to embrace being the Green Arrow before taking the killing shot. He succeeded, but Iris was worried that Barry was becoming too much like Oliver.

“We’re Going To Gotham City”

The Flash Season 5 Episode 9: “Elseworlds – Part 1” Recap

Later, Cisco allowed Barry and Oliver to share his vision of the Monitor. To their surprise, the Monitor not only saw them through Cisco’s vibe, he actually addressed them as well. The Monitor claimed that they couldn’t possibly stop him as he handed off the power to Deegan. Cisco began bleeding once the vision ended, but Oliver used his super speed to draw what he saw. He noticed Wayne Tower in the background, which let him know that the vision took place in Gotham City. After announcing that their next move was to go to Gotham, we saw the city itself as Batwoman loomed in the distance.
