CBS All Access’ Star Trek universe is expanding in multiple new directions. However, none of the projects in development are generating as much enthusiasm as the planned series featuring Patrick Stewart. The show will find Stewart reprising his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. That series was first announced in August, but now we have a better idea about when it will finally air. According to The Wrap, CBS’ new Chief Creative Officer, David Nevins, revealed that the show will debut in late 2019.
“In 2019, it’s not one Star Trek, it’s two Star Treks,” said Nevins at the 46th Annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference. Discovery [season 2] at the beginning of the year, and Picard will start at the end of the year.”

The new series is currently untitled, but it will mark the first time that Stewart has played Picard in live-action since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. In the years since, Stewart has voiced the character in video games like Star Trek: Elite Force II and Star Trek: Legacy. He has also reprised his iconic role on animated comedies like Robot Chicken and Family Guy. Picard’s series will follow season two of Star Trek: Discovery and, presumably, the inaugural season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. A spinoff headlined by Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Georgiou is also rumored to be in the works from the streaming service.
Stewart’s vehicle is still in the writing stages, but CBS has amassed an A-list group of capable hands to pen the series. This team includes Kristen Beyer, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Diandra Pendleton-Thompson, and Michael Chabon. Franchise veteran Alex Kurtzman will act as showrunner.
