Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the fifth season finale of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There will be a new director leading the charge when Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns next summer. TV Line has debuted the first photo of Henry Simmons’ Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie in his new role as head of the superspy organization. You can check out the new image here.
In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most recent season, it was revealed that when Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson briefly became Ghost Rider in the fourth season finale, it came at a great cost. In exchange for possessing the Rider’s spirit, the alien serum that resurrected him after his death in The Avengers would wear off. Following an emotional goodbye to his teammates, he chose to spend his final days on a beach in Tahiti with Agent May (Ming-Na Wen). Judging by the background in the new image, it looks as though the team is still using the Lighthouse as its base of operations.

Though Mack has served as Acting Director in prior seasons, it’s a safe bet that his mettle will be tested more than ever in season 6. Simmons himself teased the hurtles his character will have to overcome once he assumes full-time command of the agency.
“Personally, I love the challenge of being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” said Simmons. “Mack has worked side-by-side with the people he now leads, and that works to his advantage — he’s one of them. But the one thing that can hinder Mack’s ability to lead is his reluctance to put the people he loves in the line of danger. As a result, this may lead to Mack’s toughest decision as director. What sacrifices will be made?”
The sixth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere in July 2019, with Gregg directing its first episode. What do you think of the new image of Simmons as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new director? Give us your impressions in the comment section below!
