The CW is Plotting a Reboot of The 4400 for 2019

The 4400 is returning to prime time on a brand new network. Variety is reporting that the mid-aughts sci-fi series is getting the reboot treatment courtesy of The CW.

René Echevarria and Scott Peters created The 4400, which ran on USA from 2004 until 2007. In the series’ pilot episode, 4,400 strangers presumed missing from various time periods were mysteriously returned to the present day. Several survivors soon discovered that they had been given superhuman abilities. Among the diverse abilities were telekinesis, precognition, and even the power to heal. Cast members included Billy Campbell, Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Mahershala Ali before his Oscar-winning turn in 2016’s Moonlight.

The reboot will keep the basic premise of the original. However, instead of the missing persons reappearing together in one place, they will materialize individually at their exact last known locations. The logline reads, “Over the course of recent history, four thousand four hundred young adults in their reproductive prime have gone missing all over the world. Some disappearances happened as recently as a few weeks ago, while others date as far back as the day the Soviets launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957. One day in 2019, all 4,400 show up at the sites of their original abductions. None of them have aged a day and none have any memory of where they’ve been. The so called ‘4400’ must grapple with their return to a changed and hostile world and also contend with the reality that they’ve come back altered in ways that none of them yet understand.”

CBS Television Studios is producing the venture, with Taylor Elmore and Craig Sweeny. Elmore and Sweeny previously worked on the CBS series Limitless. That duo will co-write and executive produce the new pilot episode. Elmore will act as showrunner, if the series is picked up.
