Earlier this week, word broke that Naomi Watts will be starring in HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel. Hot on the heels of that announcement, Deadline is reporting that British actor Josh Whitehouse will co-star opposite Watts’ “charismatic socialite” on the new series.
Whitehouse only has a few screen credits to his name, but his involvement with the Game of Thrones franchise is likely to change that. His biggest claims to fame so far include roles in 2014’s Northern Soul as well as the BBC series Poldark. He’s also the face of a new ad campaign for Burberry, a British fashion brand. Next year, Whitehouse will star in the remake of 1983’s Valley Girl, in the role originated by Nicolas Cage. It’s hard to imagine an actress with Watts’ star power sharing the spotlight with a relative unknown like Whitehouse. However, if the new series’ casting meets the standard set by its predecessor, it shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

Thanks to Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, we might also know the title of the series. The author referred to the prequel as The Long Night when he announced Watts’ casting in a new tweet and blog post. This title has yet to be confirmed by showrunner Jane Goldman or HBO. Goldman wrote the pilot episode for the series, which is set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and depicts Westeros’ fabled “Age of Heroes” before the continent was plunged into darkness.
Casting for the new show is progressing in London under Goldman’s direction. The series doesn’t have a release date, but it will definitely air after the original Game of Thrones completes its eighth and final season in 2019.
