Diego Luna talks Cassian Andor’s legacy and why Season 2 is the last
Speaking to Deadline, Diego Luna said, “I said goodbye to this character when we wrapped… I’m going to miss this family.” Luna first portrayed Cassian in 2016’s Rogue One, and the final episodes will follow the character’s journey to the events of that film. “It’s sad, it’s painful, but also I know how lucky I am,” Luna said. “It’s been 10 years of my life.”
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Luna responded to a comment about the character carrying the Star Wars universe. “Not at all… It released so much pain… being in this universe and belonging to this family,” he said.
When asked about Cassian’s legacy, Luna said, “I don’t know… I think that’s for the audience.” As an actor and producer, he added, “I just hope other companies… decide to give creators this freedom we got.”
He praised Disney and Lucasfilm’s creative support: “They were just completely open for us to deliver this.” Luna emphasized the consistency of Tony Gilroy’s vision, saying, “The show Tony Gilroy pitched me… is the one we’re delivering today. That integrity would never happen without the freedom we got.”
Discussing why the show ends after two seasons, Luna explained the production demands: “We work two years and a half for each season of this show… so imagine five seasons. It’s impossible.” He continued, “Let’s finish in a moment where we are all loving what we’re doing… it hurts to say goodbye but it’s better to say goodbye at this moment than when you can’t keep going.”
