Despite helming several projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recent rumors suggest that the Russo brothers do not have the complete backing of higher Marvel executives, especially Kevin Feige when it comes to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. As such, speculations also indicate that due to his skepticism regarding Joe and Anthony Russo’s involvement, Feige will take on a more active role in shaping Avengers 5 and 6.
Kevin Feige to be very hands-on with Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars
According to a renowned internet scooper, the Marvel Studios president is concerned about the Russo brothers directing the next two Avengers movies. This is possibly due to their poor track record outside the MCU, so Kevin Feige will closely monitor both projects to ensure quality.
In his recent Patreon briefing, Daniel Richtman noted, “Kevin Feige has concerns about the Russos directing the next two Avengers films. However, at this stage, replacing them isn’t an option, so he plans to closely oversee the projects, ensuring the script is just right and everything stays on track. He’s going to be way more hands-on than ever with them.”
Richtman’s update comes after the Russo brothers’ latest directorial venture, The Electric State, opened to abysmal reactions from fans and critics alike. ComingSoon.net’s Jonathan Sim provided a rating of 5/10 for the movie while writing, “The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.” In general, Joe and Anthony Russo have tasted little critical success in the director’s chair following their exit from the MCU in 2019, overseeing underwhelming projects like Cherry and The Gray Man.
The Russo brothers have already helmed four titles for Marvel, namely Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame. While it remains unknown as to what changes will Kevin Feige’s increased involvement bring in the forthcoming Avengers sequels, the projects will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with filming on Doomsday set to commence in spring 2025. Avengers 5 is currently on track to hit theatres on May 1, 2026, while its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will be coming out on the big screens on May 7, 2027.
