Reports of Daniel Craig exiting Sgt. Rock have been greatly exaggerated, revealed DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran during a recent media event for the studio.

Last week, it was reported that Craig had dropped out of starring in Sgt. Rock as its title character. Now, while speaking to journalists, Gunn and Safran shared that Craig was “never attached” to the role. In fact, Safran revealed that they had “never met with Daniel,” adding that he was “just an idea.”

Sgt. Rock was first announced in November 2024. Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Queer) is set to direct the World War II movie from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, who scripted Guadagnino’s Challengers.

“What we love about Sgt. Rock is the opportunity to tell a story about heroism and conflict in compelling and unique way. Justin really wrote a wonderful screenplay and that’s what catapulted that project to the forefront,” Safran explained.

When could Sgt. Rock begin filming?

If the right actor can be found, Sgt. Rock could begin shooting this summer. The Clayface movie is also expected to begin filming around that time, meaning that the DC Universe‘s third and fourth movies could both be in production when the franchise’s first movie, Superman, hits theaters in late July.

While Gunn and Safran didn’t discuss who else was being eyed for Sgt. Rock, insider Jeff Sneider shared late last week that The Bear star Jeremy Allen White “currently holds the offer for Sgt. Rock.” However, while his schedule will seemingly be open to shoot Sgt. Rock, Sneider noted that White is “asking for too much money” to star in the DCU movie, which could lead DC Studios to cast someone else in the role. Sgt. Rock will reportedly have a budget of around $40 million, making it one of the studio’s cheaper productions.

Sgt. Rock does not yet have a release date.
