Thunderbolts* will be unlike any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in recent memory. Winter Soldier actor Sebastian Stan has shared that the blockbuster utilized practical effects over CGI.
In a conversation with Deadline ahead of his Golden Globes win this past Sunday, Stan hyped the upcoming MCU movie, which brings together supporting characters from Marvel Studios‘ Captain America, Ant-Man, and Black Widow franchises. While most Marvel movies have thousands of special effects shots, Thunderbolts* will seemingly break out of that mold, with Stan revealing that they prioritized practical stunts over excessive CGI.
“It has its own vibe, and it’s funny, and it’s real, and we did actual real stunts, like when you’re watching a truck blow up, it’s a truck blown up. It’s not CGI,” Stan told Deadline. “Marvel really wanted this to have its own- there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically, and I think that does go a long way, because people are just smart. I think audiences just, they know.”

The decision for real stunts over CGI is one of the reasons why Stan feels fans cannot compare Thunderbolts* to any previous Marvel movie. He also stated that another reason is “because of the group of characters in this film and these actors. I couldn’t have had a better time than I did with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I mean, every single one of these people are funny, they’re generous, and so I think a lot of that chemistry did make it into the movie, and I’m excited for people to see that.”
Who else is back for Thunderbolts*?
Thunderbolts* will mark Stan’s tenth appearance in the MCU as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. Besides the actor, returning MCU stars for the crossover movie include Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine, and David Harbour as Red Guardian, the latter of whom recently declared Thunderbolts* as the best experience he has ever had making a movie.
Thunderbolts* will be released in theaters on May 2, 2025, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
