Thunderbolts*: David Harbour Loved Filming MCU Movie, Says Cast Has ‘Real Chemistry’

Actor David Harbour didn’t mince words when he recently shared that filming Thunderbolts* was the best experience he’s ever had on a movie set.

“I loved it. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a better time on a movie. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a better experience with a group of people creatively, either,” he told Collider. “Every day was creative and rich and fun, but also we weren’t afraid to go to the places that scared us, and that allowed us to really live the life of these characters. It was so unexpected and wacky, and I just fell in love with that team.”

The actor, who portrays Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, added, “So, I think that what you’ll see is, again, a real chemistry. Wyatt [Russell], Sebastian [Stan], Florence [Pugh], Hannah [John-Kamen], Julia [Louis-Dreyfus], everybody, we just really wanted to mess with each other. We really admired each other for each other’s bad qualities, too. I think that we sort of got under the hoods of each other, as anti-heroes would do, and made each other feel things and think things that were provocative at times, and it just made the chemistry between us so strong. I was like, ‘Wow, I love being able to be a part of this and to do this work.’ I feel like you’ll feel that we really are a team that doesn’t want to be a team. [Laughs]”

Who is part of the main Thunderbolts* cast?

Harbour’s Red Guardian is one of the six returning MCU characters who will be part of the initial lineup for the titular team composed of antiheroes. Joining him are Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.

Also expected to play a major role are Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina “Val” Allegra de Fontaine and Lewis Pullman’s Bob, a.k.a. Sentry, who are expected to be the movie’s main antagonists. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, Laurence Fishburne, and Rachel Weisz, with the latter two reprising their respective roles from previous MCU movies as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff.

Thunderbolts* will be released in theaters on May 2, 2025, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
