James Gunn recently unveiled the first poster of his upcoming movie, Superman, starring David Corenswet in the titular role. However, this Superman poster prompted reactions from many fans of actor Henry Cavill, who previously donned the red cape in the 2013 movie, Man of Steel. Corenswet, who has previously worked in projects like Twisters, The Politician, etc., was announced as Superman in June 2023.
Henry Cavill fans make #HenryCavillSuperman trend after Superman’s poster launch
DC co-CEO and director James Gunn is gearing up for the promotional campaign of his Superman movie, which is set to release on July 11, 2025.
Surprising fans with the first material from the film, Gunn released the first motion poster of Superman on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Look up. Superman only in theaters July 11.” In the poster, fans can see Corenswet’s Superman looking toward the sky. Meanwhile, a slowed-down version of the melody of Christopher Reeve’s 1978 Superman film plays in the background. It acts as a homage to the iconic movie and Reeve.
The poster, however, has led to criticism from fans of Henry Cavill, who have stormed on X and started the trend #HenryCavillSuperman. The Witcher star’s fans also started sharing their opinions on Corenswet’s poster and called for Cavill as their only Superman.
One fan wrote, “You can imitate, promote, and make as many projects as you’d like. The world still knows Henry Cavill is and will forever be Superman.” Furthermore, another fan shared a clip of Cavill as the Kryptonian and wrote, “This is our Superman. We’re NOT interested in hearing “Star Man” from David Bowie on James Gunn’s movie.”
Additionally, a third X user shared his reaction to a post comparing the Man of Steel and Superman posters. They labeled the Corenswet version as “The biggest DOWNGRADE of all time.”
Henry Cavill received much praise for his portrayal of Superman in the former DCEU. However, after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over, the DC Universe went through a soft reboot with David Corenswet getting cast as Superman.
