Superman & Lois Season 4 Showrunners Explain Doomsday’s Fate in Finale

Superman & Lois Season 4’s ambitious finale continued Kal-El’s battle against Doomsday. But, many were left surprised by how showrunners Brent Fletcher and Todd Helbing chose to end the fight. Following the finale, the two talked about Doomsday’s fate in the show.

Superman teamed up with his sons and Steel to fight a rampaging Doomsday in the finale. A surprise attack from Steel left Doomsday unconscious, allowing Superman to fly him to the sun. But as Doomsday / Bizarro regained consciousness, he didn’t resist the Man of Steel. The two stared at each other and Doomsday remembered his pain and suffering as Bizarro.

Instead of a final blow, Clark gently pushed the Doomsday towards the sun, and the latter simply accepted his death before disintegrating. While speaking to ComicBook, Fletcher and Helbing explained the final moment between Doomsday and Superman, and why the former accepted his fate.

Fletcher said:

“I think by the end, Doomsday’s life had been denigrated down to just pain, suffering, dying, and hate. He was always raging. And so, what the end is for us, I think, is release. Release from all the hatred and the pain, and an acknowledgment between these two that they shared something.”

He continued:

“They had that moment between them, just an acknowledgment of the things that they shared, and that to us felt more important than a fight where you bet him physically. It felt, it felt more poetic in a lot of ways.”

To this, Helbing added:

“And in a lot of ways, Doomsday, you know, Bizarro Superman’s story is really tragic, probably the most tragic of the series. And it felt like out of any way to end it, this was the most graceful.”

Doomsday’s sacrificial death was one of the many surprises from the finale, including a cameo from Krypto. Fans can stream the Superman & Lois Season 4 finale on The CW app.
