Jon Bernthal portrayed Frank Castle / The Punisher in the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil before appearing in The Punisher between 2017 and 2019. He is now set to reprise the role in Daredevil: Born Again, a Marvel Cinematic Universe show. Recently, it was confirmed that he would appear in the MCU beyond the upcoming Daredevil series.
Brad Winderbaum says Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher will 100% return after Daredevil
Brad Winderbaum, the head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, revealed during his appearance on the Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast that Bernthal’s Punisher would “100%” return after Daredevil: Born Again.
When asked if The Punisher was a character Winderbaum could see continuing on in the MCU, the Marvel executive responded, “100%. We feel the same way! He (Bernthal) is so great in that role. I can’t wait for you to see him on screen in this series, and there is absolutely a future for him in the MCU afterwards.”
Back in August 2024, after Disney unveiled the first look trailer of Daredevil: Born Again at D23 in California, Bernthal reflected on how he felt after learning that he would be returning to the MCU as The Punisher. “You know, gratitude, but I’ve said it before it’s really not about coming back,” he told LADbible. “It’s about how you come back, and it’s about doing it right, and preserving the integrity of the original project and the original work and what was brought to it, and that’s what I’m really so grateful for,” he further stated.
The King Richard actor added, “I’m grateful to be doing it with these people. Grateful that we’re sort of preserving the intensity, and, again, the integrity of what we were doing before, and building on that.”
Bernthal has received widespread acclaim for his rendition of the character. Before him, the live-action version of The Punisher was portrayed by Dolph Lundgren in the titular 1989 movie, Thomas Jane in the 2004 movie, and Ray Stevenson in 2008’s Punisher: War Zone.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to release on Disney+ on March 4, 2025.
