Star Trek Prequel Movie From Andor Director Gets Exciting Update

A new Star Trek movie is closer than ever to receiving the greenlight from Paramount.

The Star Trek prequel movie is part of the Kelvin timeline

In January 2024, Paramount tapped Star Wars: Andor director Toby Haynes to helm a new Star Trek movie that would be set in the Kelvin timeline, the name given to the trilogy of films that began in 2009 with J. J. Abrams’ franchise reboot. The untitled Star Trek Origin movie is said to be an “origin story” that takes place “decades” before the 2009 reboot.

While Paramount has been light on details regarding the project since the initial announcement, Puck (via TrekMovie.com) recently shared an update on the prequel movie, revealing that two sources have shared that the script by Seth Grahame-Smith “is done and on its way toward a green light, possibly by the end of the year, for a shoot in the first half of 2025.” Puck confirmed that the prequel would be “set well before the U.S.S. Enterprise era.”

Abrams’ Star Trek film series stalled out after the third installment, 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, with a fourth movie stuck in development hell. Quentin Tarantino, S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman were all at one point attached to write and/or direct Star Trek 4, which is currently without a director. However, the movie does have a screenwriter, as Steve Yockey is reportedly penning the latest draft of the script.

Most of the main cast of the reboot series has expressed interest in returning for a fourth Kelvin-set Star Trek movie, with Zachary Quinto (Spock) explaining back in September that there is “no cutoff” for the cast.

“The original cast did movies for decades, well into their 50s, 60s. The stories might be different. We might not be running as fast on the other planets, but I think anything’s possible,” he explained, “and I think there’s nothing more fulfilling as an artist then to come back to something after time has passed, and cultivate a relationship with it from a completely different perspective, and a completely new point of view.”

All three Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies are currently streaming on Paramount+.
