Jac Schaeffer, known for her work on WandaVision, has expanded the Marvel Television universe with Agatha All Along, focusing on Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn). Recently, Schaeffer shared insights about Nicholas Scratch’s origins. She hinted at a connection between Nicholas Scratch’s father and Rio Vidal, also known as Death (Aubrey Plaza).
Jac Schaeffer teases Agatha conceived Nicholas Scratch with Rio / Lady Death
In a recent Backstory Magazine interview (via ComicBookMovie), Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer addressed fan theories surrounding Nicholas Scratch’s parentage.
While discussing speculation that Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal/Death are Nicky’s parents, Schaeffer noted, “I will say that when we were casting sometimes, we were like, ‘Does that kid look like Rio? Does that kid look like Aubrey Plaza?’ Fans and viewers, yes, are picking up on our brainwaves for sure.” This comment aligns with theories linking Nicholas Scratch’s parentage to Death, supported by Rio’s presence at Agatha’s labor in the series finale.
Additional scenes appear to support this idea, with Rio shown holding hands with Nicky after his death. This moment has led some to interpret a deeper bond between the characters. Schaeffer acknowledged the strong fan interest in Agatha and Rio’s connection, saying, “I didn’t anticipate that the shippers would be so fervent… The amount of people that care is staggering to me. It’s my hope that in the MCU there’s more unpacking of the Agatha & Rio backstory.”
Schaeffer clarified that while the show hints at a connection between Agatha and Rio, it does not fully explore all the details. In an earlier interview with Variety, she explained, “That’s a story for another day… The truth is that even if I did have an answer, I don’t cover it in this property,” indicating that Nicholas Scratch’s origins may be revisited in future stories.
As the show leaves these elements open, Agatha All Along provides a basis for future exploration of the characters. The series is currently available to stream on Disney+.
